My phone doesn't sound an alert when receiving a text

When I receive a text no matter what sound it is set on the phone doesn't play an alert the text just appears

iPhone 6, iOS 10.0.2

Stupid question but did you check the volume level ? (ie not at zero ?)

I Have made sure the volume is at its highest level. When an IPad is near it will sound an alert but the phone remains silent.
